Introduction

Rohu Carp (Rahu) is scientifically known as Labeo rohita. It is a highly popular freshwater fish, widely recognized for its mild taste, firm texture, and nutritional benefits. It is a staple in Pakistani, Indian, and South Asian cuisines, often used in traditional curries, fried preparations, and steamed dishes.

Rohu Carp (Rahu) differs from seawater fish due to its distinct freshwater flavor and firm, juicy meat. While it is naturally rich in protein and essential nutrients, one key aspect to note is that Rohu contains bones embedded within the meat, making a completely boneless cut impossible. Even fillets will contain small bones, requiring careful preparation when cooking.

Flavor Profile

Rohu Carp (Rahu) offers a mild, slightly sweet flavor paired with firm, flaky meat. It holds spices beautifully, allowing masalas and marinades to penetrate deeply. As a result, it’s an excellent choice for Pakistani-style curries, deep-frying, and charcoal grilling. Moreover, the meat stays moist and flavorful throughout cooking. Whether you prepare it traditionally or with a twist, Rahu consistently delivers a satisfying seafood experience.

Habitat

Rohu Carp (Rahu) is native to South Asia and thrives in freshwater bodies like rivers, lakes, dams, and fish farms. Although it is naturally found in rivers and reservoirs, the majority of commercially available Rahu is farm-raised, ensuring a sustainable supply and consistent quality.

Catching Method

At Wholesome Seafood, we carefully source Rohu Carp (Rahu) from trusted freshwater farms and inland fisheries. These partners follow responsible practices, ensuring clean water conditions and healthy fish growth.

Moreover, we rely on traditional netting techniques that are both sustainable and low-impact. As a result, our Rohu arrives fresh, safe, and eco-friendly, ready to be cleaned and delivered according to your order. By choosing us, you support ethical sourcing while enjoying high-quality freshwater fish that meet our strict standards.

Physical Attributes

Rohu Carp (Rahu) features a streamlined, silver-gray body with a slightly arched back and broad fins. Its firm, white flesh has a rich texture, making it ideal for hearty dishes.

Unlike boneless fish varieties, Rohu naturally contains embedded bones due to its skeletal structure. Even when filleted, the cuts will include fine bones, which are common in traditional South Asian fish preparations. Despite this, many seafood lovers enjoy its clean taste, especially in classic curry-style meals and fried recipes.

We offer Rohu Carp (Rahu) in various sizes, ranging from 500 g to 1 kg per fish.

Rohu Carp (Rahu) stands out as one of the most versatile freshwater fish in South Asian cooking. Its firm texture holds up well during cooking, making it ideal for curries, grilling, deep-frying, and steaming.

In particular, it absorbs spices beautifully, allowing flavors to penetrate deep into the meat. As a result, it’s often prepared in rich masala gravies, mustard seed sauces, and lemon-spiced marinades. Whether you’re cooking a traditional family recipe or trying something modern, Rahu adapts easily and delivers bold, satisfying flavor every time.

Health Benefits

Rohu Carp (Rahu) is a nutrient-rich freshwater fish that supports overall health and wellness. It provides lean protein that helps build muscle, maintain strength, and support daily energy needs. In addition, it’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health and reduce inflammation.

They sent me fresh fish seems like straight out of the water. It was even clean to the point that I just formally washed it ordered Rohu from them, but they have a huge variety of different kinds of fish, prawns and different seafood. No typical fish smell as well. Had a wonderful experience 😀
